Piscataway, NJ – Margaret M. (Gatens) Ely, 96, passed away in the early hours of Monday, October 9, 2017 within the hospice unit of St. Claire’s Hospital in Dover. Born in Bally Shannon, Ireland, Margaret immigrated to the United States in 1924 where she grew up in Bernardsville. She also lived in Belle Mead and Piscataway until her retirement in 2005 when she settled to Whiting. In recent years, Margaret relocated to Piscataway to be closer to her family.
Margaret loved the time she spent caring for her family as a homemaker. A devout catholic, she was very pro-life and enjoyed all the time spent with the New Jersey Right to Life.
Predeceased by her husband Grafton in 1997 and by three siblings; Louise Heinold, Noel Shumack and Leo Gatens, Margaret leaves behind her loving and devoted children; Joan Ely-Sundelof of Piscataway, Kenneth T. Ely, with whom she lived, her dear sister; Laureen Orlando of NY, two cherished grandchildren; Deborah Johnson and her husband Eric and Jeff Sundelof and his wife Judy along with three adored great-grandchildren; Jeffrey Sundelof, Jr., Brennan Sundelof and Chase Johnson.
Visitation will be held in Middlesex Funeral Home, 528 Bound Brook Road, Middlesex, NJ 08846 on Thursday, October 12, 2017 from 4-8pm and on Friday, October 13, 2017 beginning 8:45 am. On Friday, October 13, 2017, funeral services will begin 9:15 am in the funeral home followed by a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Frances Cabrini Parish, 208 Bound Brook Avenue, Piscataway, NJ 08854. Burial will follow in the family plot of Resurrection Burial Park in Piscataway.
