John "Jack" Van Allen
South Plainfield – John A. “Jack” Van Allen, 90, passed away peacefully at home on December 2, 2017, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born in Elizabeth, Jack grew up in Rahway. He graduated from St. Peter’s High School in New Brunswick and continued his studies at Seton Hall University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in marketing. Jack retired from Merck & Co., Inc. in Rahway in 1989, where he spent his entire career starting in the print shop and advancing to various managerial and technical positions.
An honorably discharged veteran of the United States Coast Guard, Jack served with the Merchant Marines in Oceangoing Services during WWII until 1945. He was a faithful communicant of Sacred Heart RC Church of South Plainfield. He enjoyed his home life and tinkering around the house.
Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Nancy (Matlaga) Van Allen; children Elise Van Allen, Mark Van Allen, Mary Leslie Richardson, and Susan Costas (Peter); two grandchildren, Spencer and Evan Richardson; and a nephew, Richard Demarest. He was predeceased by his sister, Eileen Demarest.
Family and friends may attend visitation on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the McCriskin-Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080. Funeral services will begin on Thursday, December 7, at 9 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a funeral mass in Sacred Heart RC Church, 149 South Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080 at 10 a.m.
Entombment will follow in Resurrection Burial Park, Piscataway.
