Garrett “Doc” Doherty, 62, of Edison, died suddenly on January 2, 2019 at home.
Born in Jersey City to Thomas and Jane Doherty (nee Hanley), he was raised in Colonia and Edison; graduating from J.P. Stevens High School in 1974.
Doc went on to follow in his family’s footsteps becoming the 4th generation to work for Bayway Refinery in Linden, where he was a Processing Operator. After retiring, he served as a safety consultant.
President of Local 877 Teamsters and proud president of the Teamsters Motorcycle Association, Doc participated in many charitable runs and events. He was also a member of the Joint Council of Teamsters Local 73 and sat on the OSHA National Board of Directors.
An avid Rangers, Jets, and Yankee fan who loved time on his Harley, Doc devoted his life to his wife and family. He was selfless in every decision he made.
Doc was known as a jokester, always finding the light in every situation. His greatest love came when his grandson Giovanni was born, dedicating every moment to watching him grow and experiencing life together.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Doherty.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 36 years, Cynthia Doherty (nee Blash); his mother, Jane Doherty; his daughters Danielle Miyagishima and husband Chris, Alicia DiPietro and husband John, Cassie Doherty and husband Heath and Leeann Doherty; his adored grandson Giovanni DiPietro; his siblings, William Doherty and wife Laura, Thomas Doherty, Mary Lochard and husband Raymond and JaneAnn Naha and husband Craig, as well as his many nieces and nephews, extended family, teamster brothers, and friends.
Funeral services will begin at 9:00AM on Monday, January 7, 2019 at the McCriskin-Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:15am at St. Francis Assisi Cathedral in Metuchen. Interment will follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia.
Family and friends are welcome to gather for visitation on Sunday, January 6, 2019 from 1:00 to 5:00PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Doc’s memory to: St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral in Metuchen, where he was a communicant.
