Obituary of William Richard Clough
William Richard Clough, 98, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2023, in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
William was born on February 23, 1925, in Tower City, Pennsylvania, to Eva Margaret Underkoffler and Walter Daniel Clough. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Radioman, First Class.
Following his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946, William attended the University of Maryland, where he received his Bachelor of Arts and Law Degrees. He then joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), where he spent a 25-year career as a Special Agent before retiring in 1975.
In 1949, he married Margaret Marian Gittings, and with their three children, they lived in Knoxville, TN; Detroit, MI; Baltimore, MD; and Piscataway, NJ before moving to Martinsville, NJ in 1965.
Following the FBI, William spent many years practicing law, including the Westfield, NJ firm of Lindabury, McCormick & Estabrook; the Flemington, NJ firm of Ligorano & Sozansky; and Clough & Clough, the Flemington, NJ firm he started with his wife, Marian.
He was a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Inc. for 46 years, as well as a former member of the Bound Brook Presbyterian Church in NJ.
William was predeceased by his granddaughter, Lauren, and his loving wife of 68 years, Margaret Marian (Gittings) Clough. He is survived by his children Linda Metenosky (Harry), Patricia Oberrender (Girard), and David Clough (Laura); his grandchildren Adam (Kristen), Susan (Arturo), Maggie, David (Nicole), Sarah, Taylor, Michael, Peter and Madison; his great-granddaughter, Sabina; and his sister, Jean Hoffman.
Burial services will be held privately.
