William J. McDonough, 88, passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2026 at home.

Born in Plainfield, Mr. McDonough resided in South Plainfield for the majority of his life.

A faithful communicant of Sacred Heart RC Church in South Plainfield, Mr. McDonough was also a member of the South Plainfield Knights of Columbus Council 6203.

Mr. McDonough retired from the United States Postal Service as a Supervisor of Postal Operations in New Providence, NJ. Mr. McDonough began his career as a letter carrier and worked his way up into his management position.

Shortly after Mr. McDonough retired, he and his wife Patricia moved for a short time to Sierra Vista, AZ, where they enjoyed exploring the beauty and history of the desert southwest.

Mr. McDonough enjoyed traveling with his wife, Patricia. Their most memorable trips include traveling through Ireland and their 60th wedding anniversary cruise to Alaska.

Mr. McDonough served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was awarded a sharp shooter medal and was the top bowler on the base bowling team.

Bowling was Mr. McDonough’s passion, he bowled in leagues for most of his adult life. He was recognized as a top senior bowler in the country, with a consistent high average and number of games won.

Predeceased by all of his siblings, surviving is his wife Patricia; daughter, Kathleen McDonough of Newark and son Mark McDonough of South Plainfield.

The visitation will be held on Monday, February 16, 2026 from 4-7pm in the McCriskin – Gustafson Home For Funerals 2425 Plainfield Ave. South Plainfield, NJ 07080.

The funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at 10am at the Church of the Sacred Heart, South Plainfield, NJ.

Following mass, cremation service will take place privately and Mr. McDonough’s cremated remains will be placed to rest in the family niche at Holy Redeemer Cemetery Mausoleum, South Plainfield.
