Joan M. Newman Spring Lake Heights - Joan ( Syers ) Newman, 74, died on Monday, April 30, 2007 in Specialty Hospital at Monmouth in Long Branch. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Joan resided there until 1981 before moving to Belmont, Massachusetts and in 1999, Mrs. Newman settled to Fairway Mews in Spring Lake Heights. Prior to her marriage, Joan worked at the Post Exchange in the Brooklyn Army Terminal and was a Friend of the Seton Association of the Sisters of Charity. She loved gardening, pets, and more importantly she loved her grandchildren. Mrs. Newman is pre-deceased by her parents; Louise and George "Babe" Syers, a son Raymond who died in 2003 and a daughter in-law Natalie who died in 2006. Surviving is her daughter in-law Anne Vardy - Newman of Plainfield, her 2 grandchildren; Andrew and Matthew, and her son George of Conneticut. Also surviving are several loving cousins. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2007 at 9:00 AM in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield followed by a 10:00 AM funeral mass in St. Bernard of Clairvaux & St. Stanislaus Kostka RC Church, corner of George Street & Emerson Avenue, Plainfield, NJ 07060. Committal services will follow in Somerset Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations in Joan's name can be made to the Fanwood - Scotch Plains YMCA, 1340 Martine Ave., Scotch Plains, NJ 07076
