Obituary of Herbert J. Bennett

Herbert J. Bennett South Plainfield, NJ - Herbert J. Bennett, 82, died at home on November 22, 2009 with his loving wife and step-son by his side. Born in Merrimac, MA to his late parents George and Gladys (Elliott) Bennett, he lived in Plainfield before settling to South Plainfield forty-six years ago. Retiring from Local 221, Herbert was a union laborer for thirty years. An avid gardener, he also enjoyed watching movies, reading, traveling, and sports. He is predeceased by his first wife of forty years, Beatrice (Hanger) Bennett, his daughter Nancy Bengivenga and by four siblings; George, Fred, Jennie and Nellie. Herbert is survived by his wife Joan (McCallion) of nineteen years, daughter Gay A. Gavinski of South Plainfield and former sons-in-law Emil Gavinski and George Bengivenga, his step-sons Gerry Sherayko and his wife Carolyn of Virginia and Gary Sherayko of South Plainfield, sisters Gladys Smith and Fay and her husband Bill Kubach, sisters-in-law; Jean Bennett and Jane Bennett. He also leaves behind his mother-in-law Margaret McCallion and sister-in-law and her husband Dolores and Kevin Bristol as well as his pets; Baby Sunshine and grandpuppy Max, and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, November 29, 2009 beginning at Noon in the McCriskin-Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080. A service reflecting Herbert's life will be held at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Mid New Jersey Chapter, 246 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst, NJ 07755 or to a charity of your choice.
