Flemington – Aginso Valentino, 100, passed away ten days shy of his 101st birthday on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 in Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington.  

Born in Casagiova, Italy in 1920, Aginso immigrated to the United States and resided in Long Island.   Upon graduating from Hempstead High School in 1939, he attended the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York and was shipped out to serve in WWII where he took cargo to various ports. He participated in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day, crossing the English Channel from England to France beachheads of Omaha and Utah bringing troops, artillery and equipment. He graduated from the US Merchant Marine Academy in 1942 and served in the Korean and Vietnams wars.  He received his Master’s License in 1945 and traveled the world during peacetime to bring goods between the US and countries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, India, South America, Russia and China.

Aginso retired in 1985 with numerious medals and accolades.   Aginso and his beloved wife, Martha, settled to Flemington 30 years ago.

He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Martha (Bencivenga) Valentino; son, Tony Valentino and wife Donna of Texas; daughter, Rita Valentino and husband Irwin of Maryland and brother, Rudy Valentino.  He will also be missed by his six grandchildren, Jennifer, Amy, Michael, Mark, Maggie and Max as well as four great grandchildren, Caitlin, Jacqueline, Anthony and Brandon.

A funeral mass will be held on Monday, April 19, 2021 in Our Lady of Czestochowa RC Church, 809 Hamilton Blvd, South Plainfield, NJ 07080 at 11AM.  Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains.


Family and friends may gather in McCriskin – Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue South Plainfield NJ 07080 on Sunday, April 18, 2021 from 1-4PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Aginso’s memory to the United States Merchant Marine Academy 300 Steamboat Rd, Kings Point, NY 11024 https://cms.usmma.edu/about/gift-policy.
