Obituary of Geraldine Scarpitto
Geraldine Scarpitto
Age: 92 * Formerly of South Plainfield
Raritan Township, NJ – Geraldine (Mega) Scarpitto, 92, passed away at her daughter’s residence in Ringoes with loving family at her bedside. Born in Iselin to the late Attillo and Angela (Spinelli) Mega, Dolly and her family resided in Newark and Hillside prior to settling in South Plainfield in 1957.
Dolly had a short clerical career after high school at the A&P Office. Once she married, and the babies started coming, Dolly loved being a homemaker, which by the way, she was amazing at! As the kids grew older, she enjoyed office work and some retail work. Dolly inherited her father’s sewing and tailor skills and eventually, she opened up her own business designing and sewing bridal fashions.
She enjoyed volunteering, assisting children with special needs and during her children’s youth, she participated in the school’s PTA. She was instrumental in establishing special classes for the mentally handicapped children within the South Plainfield School System. As soon as the grandkids came into play, her and Joe settled back and enjoyed every moment possible with them as they were the light of their world.
As the years passed, and holidays were spent together, one never passed without new outfits for all or the best Halloween costumes ever. She was a talented cook and baker and she loved to decorate her home. She enjoyed refinishing furniture and was way ahead of the flea-market flip.
Family meant everything to Dolly and she thoroughly enjoyed being a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an extremely generous person, but her patience exceeded that. She was always kind and caring to others and considerate of their feelings. Being a shy and quiet girl growing up, her brothers gave her the nickname “Dolly.”
Predeceased by her daughter JoAnn in 2016, siblings; Marino, Edward, Frank and Kenneth Mega and step-sisters Hilda Schomp and Lottie Gordon, Dolly is survived by her loving and devoted family; husband Joseph R. Scarpitto and their children; Barbara Geraghty and her husband Raymond of Ringoes, Mary Lynn Calder and her husband Tom of Leland, NC, Joseph F. Scarpitto and his wife Cathy of Lavalette. Dolly will be missed by many, especially her grandchildren; Sabrina Bogusz of Flemington, Brett Calder of Edison, Joseph L. Scarpitto and his wife Natalie of South Plainfield, Jessica Wylam and her husband John of Point Pleasant, Gerrianne Scarpitto of Houston, TX, Leonard Joseph Scarpitto (LJ) of Mount Laurel and great-grandson Marko Puzyk of Flemington.
A service will be held at Holy Redeemer Mausoleum in South Plainfield on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 beginning 11:00 am.
