Mr. Hook was my introduction to gym classes as a youth, as he was for many kids that started school in Kennedy. Throughout my years in elementary, he was always a gentle and stable force that guided me and helped me push to find my own potential. Further, he was a staple of my youth, and served as one of the many teachers in that school that fulfilled vital roles in my development by going the extra mile to let me know that though I came from an upbringing that was not very caring or structured- that I was cared for, and I was appreciated and welcome in this world; he fought in the ways that he could to always ensure I had opportunity and a chance. Passed elementary, he served as the smiling face that would welcome me back in my old stomping grounds, assuring me well INto adulthood that what he, and teachers like Mrs. Doyon, Mrs.Block, Mrs. Luck, Mr. Miller, and Mr. Czech took care to remind me of as a child, was not just a placating platitude, but a genuine feeling and belief. It is because of amazing people like Al Hook, I believe, that I have been able to remain as loving a ne caring as I am today, and to retain the feeling of value that I believe the education system and its representatives hold to positively shape, grow and nurture our youth. To his family and friends: I not only mourn with you, but I thank you for being present in Mr. Hooks life - because, with no doubt in my mind, I believe you helped shape and inspire the amazing and I aspiring man he was who touched the hearts if so many. He was truly one of the best gym teachers, friends, and mentors I have ever had. Mr. Hook: Thank you for reaching the top of that rope as a kid. Thank you for the welcoming hugs as an adult. Thank you for always letting me know I matter.
