Dear Irene, Thomas and Family,
I am deeply saddened by the passing Tom. I had the good fortune to have known Tom my entire career at Saint Peter’s College. Tom started St. Peter’s just six months after I began and we both retired on the same day in 2004. In fact Tom wrote and presented my retirement tribute. That is 32 very important years together. This gave me enough time to get a good measure of Tom. Thomas Donnelly one of the most dedicated Professors at the College and he continued to serve the College well after his retirement. His devotion to the College and his family was the essence of his purpose in life and his legacy will live on through is students and family. Tom was one of the gentlest, caring and devoted people I have had the privilege to know. Tom’s’ care and concern for students was at the heart of who he was and what he stood for. He directly impacted the lives of hundreds of student he personally counselled. I can unequivocally testify that Tom worked twice as hard as any faculty member and was very happy to do so. In fact, nothing gave Tom greater satisfaction than to help others.
Tom, Steve Doyle and I were like the 3 Amigos. Always planning new ideas for the students, teasing scores of Work Study students, finding ways to be of service to the community and society and sharing our personal goals, concerns, tragedies and achievements. We had a comfort level together unlike any department I knew. Most departments are characterized by internal fighting and clashing egos. Not our department, we were always there for each other and having a lot of fun working together. I always looked up to Tom because of his steadfast commitment to the students and the College. He always knew what the right path to follow. I was honored to serve under Tom during his long 21 year tenure as Department Chair. Tom and I had more in common than sharing careers together, we were both born in Jersey City, to which we returned to give back to our “home town” and we both received our PhD’s from NYU just a year apart.
My life was blessed by having Tom as a friend and colleague. He lives on through the lives impacted, especially his students, friends and family. He is part of my legacy and thousands of others. I had the privilege to see how his son, Thomas grew up to be a mirror image of his dad both in good looks, temperament and commitment to do help others.
Thomas H. Donnelly left the world a much better place for being so committed to others. I salute you and honor you. Thank you my friend, Rest in Peace.
Neal Goodman, Faculty Emeritus Saint Peters College.

I don't have a lot of memories of Uncle Tom; him sitting by the pool at his and Aunt Irene's house in Jersey, smiling away as my siblings and enjoyed a fun water break from our road trip back to NY or the cards he would send to the house for different occasions. I remember when big events happened in my life, though we had hardly spent much time together, I would get a card from him in support. Our interactions were few but each one made it clear in my mind that he was a genuinely wonderful and kind person to his very core.

Uncle Tom was the one who kept in touch with everyone. He was always calling to see how the kids were, and then he wanted updates on all the siblings. He was so focused on relationships, maintaining them and building them. When Liz got married he brought a family history to show to Bruno's french speaking parents. Amazingly they bonded despite the language barrier. When I got married we put it together that my husband's mom, whose maiden name was Avon, and my dad grew up on the same street. When Uncle Tom found out he said, "Oh right, the Avon lady," He remembered my husband's grandmother. A couple years ago he took me aside and encouraged me to keep in touch with family members with birthday and Christmas cards, something I'm not good at, but I aspire to one day be able to be as good at relationships as Uncle Tom. He was a wonderful man. I already miss him.

One of the first students I met at Xavier in 1953! Fortunately we and other classmates met often over the last many years. Tom was a true gentle man, very generous with his time and very dedicated to his family, friends and faith. Always a pleasure to be with. My prayers and condolences to Irene and Tom and their families. Rest In Peace Colonel!
