Obituary of Leola Elin

Please share a memory of Leola to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leola Elin on Saturday January 18, 2025, at the age of 97. Leola Elin was born on in Daytona, FL, to Fredericka (Freddie) and Isaiah Hinson.  Later she moved to New Jersey to assist with the care of her older sister. Here she met the love of her life - beloved husband John Elin of 40 years. They made a life together in New Brunswick New Jersey, along with their two daughters, Linda Elin and Alberta Elin Griffin.

Leola was a cherished matriarch and loving grandmother. She was known for her warmth, generosity, her sense of style as well as her exceptional cooking, always bringing the family together with her famous Gumbo as well as her decadent Sweet Potato Pie.

Leola was known for her strong will, unwavering determination, and love and support for her family and community. She was a devout member of Sharon Baptist Church in New Brunswick, NJ for 60 years. Leola was a dedicated servant of the Lord, participating in various positions at the church such as the Nurse Unit, Hymnal Book Club and Missionary Society. She was president of the Missionary’s from 1994-1998. Leola frequently represented the church as a Delegate at the annual National Baptist Conventions. She also attended numerous trainings and Church Retreats. Leola served her community and church wholeheartedly; wherever she saw a need, she tried to fill it.

Leola worked at Permacel in manufacturing in North Brunswick, NJ. She retired after decades of faithful service. After retiring, not wanting to rest on her laurels, she worked part-time as a lunch aide in the New Brunswick school district for nearly 15 more years!

Preceding Leola in joining the Lord: her parents Freddie and Isaiah, her beloved husband John and sadly, both of her daughters Linda and Alberta; as well as all of her many siblings and several extended family members.

Leola is lovingly survived by: grandsons John D. Griffin, Kevin D. Griffin, Matthew V. Griffin [Jamie Griffin], and granddaughter Charise (Griffin) Edwards [Calvert Edwards], son-in-law Francis D. Griffin; great grandchildren Kevin, Amber, Trent and Max Griffin, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
