Michael G. Hlavaty South Plainfield - Michael G. Hlavaty, 79, died on Friday, April 2, 2010 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville. Born and raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Mr. Hlavaty lived in Somerville prior to settling in South Plainfield in 1962. A member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Dunellen, Mike served as trustee and also coached basketball. He served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict as a Radio Tech and was also and avid golfer. For many years Mr. Hlavaty worked as a member of the technical staff with Bells Labs in their Murray Hill, Morristown and Whippany locations and served as President of the Bell Labs Chapter Toast Master International. A devoted family man who cherished his grandchildren he was also a founding member of the Geary Park Association. Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years Shirley (Toth) his 3 sons; Michael and his wife Ghada of Clifton, Robert and his wife Marianne of South Bound Brook and Edward of Lambertville his sister Mary Sauers of Johnstown, PA., and his 5 grandchildren; Jenny, Andrew, Chrisitina, Robert and Maggie. Panahida services will be held on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 10:00 AM in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, NJ 07080 followed by a 11:00 AM funeral mass at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, Dunellen. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 5, 2010 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM in the funeral home.
