Joseph C. Balazs
South Plainfield - Joseph C. Balazs, 93, died on Monday, March 8, 2010 at Robert Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Balazs resided in Irvington and Maplewood prior to settling to South Plainfield in 1965.
For 30 years, Joe worked for Chesbor - Whitman in Newark in the Warehouse. He retired in 1982.
Mr. Balazs earned 2 purple hearts during WWII while serving with Army. He also fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He is a member of the South Plainfield VFW Memorial Post 6763 and a communicant of Sacred Heart RC Church also located in South Plainfield.
Mr. Balazs took pride in his family particularly in his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He always attended his great granddaughters' annual dance recitals and was often found helping his wife around the house. He enjoyed the Sunday Night card games with his family and friends and his trips down to Atlantic City.
He is pre-deceased by his 2 sisters and 1 brother.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years Lena (Santoro), his daughter Madelyn Aquilina and her husband Philip Jr. of South Plainfield and his 2 grandchildren; Philip III and his wife Doris of South Plainfield and Steven Aquilina of Asbury Park. Also surviving are his 2 great grandchildren; Philip IV and Alexes Aquilina.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 9:15 AM in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ followed by a 10:00 AM funeral mass at Sacred Heart RC Church, South Plainfield.
Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM in the funeral home.
