Obituary of Robert G. Mergner

Robert Mergner Piscataway - Robert G. Mergner, 72, died Saturday, October 27, 2012 at JFK Medical Center in Edison. Born in Newark, Bob grew up in Irvington before settling in Piscataway 48 years ago. During a dedicated and successful career as a union carpenter, he began his career with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America as a lather with the former local # 106 of Plainfield. They merged with Milltown's Local # 1006, and lastly merging into Local # 254. He held various elected positions in the Union throughout his career, none more important than being appointed as Representative of the General President in Washington, DC, for ten years, serving four General President's. He returned to work at Rutgers prior to his retiring at age 62. He also served as a poll worker for Middlesex County Board of Elections for fifteen years. Bob will best be remembered for his love and support of his family, his out-spoken strong will, and his unspoken generosity to many throughout his life. He will be deeply missed by his beloved family and many friends. Bob is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years; Barbara (LeGates), four children; Robert K. Mergner, Kathy Currao and her husband, Bob, Karen A. Mergner and Donna Lusinger and her husband, Ed, and five grandchildren; Vincent, Devan & Kailey Currao and Christopher & Katelyn Lusinger. Also surviving, his sister; Helen Wood of Cedar Grove, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 5, 2012 at 9:00 AM in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield NJ 07080 followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Fatima RC Church, Piscataway NJ. Interment will follow in Resurrection Burial Park, Piscataway. Family & friends may attend the visitation hours on Saturday, November 3, 2012 from 7-9 PM and Sunday, November 4, 2012 from 2-4 PM & 7-9 PM in the funeral home.
