My family and I were very sad to hear of the passing of your father. I recently went to see Uncle Stanley and Aunt Jo. Uncle Stanley was having a very good day and talked a lot about what a great alhlete your father was. Please know your family will be in our prayers. With great sympathy, the Calvi family.

We all have wonderful memories of Al from both business and personal settings. He was a wonderful craftsman, a master with the brush, wonderful to be around. He always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. We all thought the world of him. He will be sadly missed. Rest in peace dear Al, enjoy that cigar and peaceful happiness with all your loved ones. Paul, Linda & the guys of Herman Grefe & Son, Inc.

I am so sorry to hear this, but as I sit here and think about my Great-Uncle Al, I can't help but smile at every memory that comes to mind. Thank you, Uncle Al, for each of those wonderful memories. I take comfort in knowing that you're up there, cigar in hand, with Aunt Elaine by your side, giving my grandfather a run for his money at horseshoes, and making my grandmother- your big sister- laugh like you always did. Much love.

I have oh-so-many memories of my Uncle Al. The thread that ties the birthdays, 4th of July parades, basketball games & pizza parties, weddings, family reunions, fishing, and golf all together? They are all happy, smiling, joyful times - made all the more so by Uncle Al.
Independence Day and Labor Day always finished with a bang when Uncle Al got all the cousins together, handing out a Sparkler to each of us and, giddy with anticipation, we'd invariably start hopping about and when we thought we just couldn't wait one more second - Uncle Al displayed the patience of a kindly Uncle Sam or Santa -- and lit each Sparkler till we were a swirling, twirling festival of lights. Pretty spectacular first memories of a special uncle and life influence.
There was the ubiquitous cigar of course. Part of Uncle Al's sweet success. He and Aunt Elaine borrowed some of our luggage once (who borrows luggage today?!) and when we opened to pack - one couldn't help nose up to Uncle Al's presence. Love it.
He was there for us. I remember one time my parents were traveling in Europe and as a senior in high school, I wanted, nay, felt I needed to file a college registration. I mustered up the courage and asked Uncle Al to front me/us the check - and without hesitation - he wrote out the payday - a la my own Daddy Warbucks!
As adults, Bill and I enjoyed visits with Aunt Elaine and Uncle Al - we made it a point to stop over for beer and laughs. Bill so admired Uncle Al and often said Al was the father he wished he had. I have heard a similar sentiment expressed by others, but for Bill, a kind, good man who was a fellow sailor who drank beer and laughed a lot, was the paternal angel sent to him, especially.
We also enjoyed taking them to the racetrack. Couldn't win much more than admission, but lots of fun betting on horses names (Crazy Aunt Alice, to name one!)
And I can't forget going to help Uncle Al one Thanksgiving when his car when kaput. Longer story, but two things came out of it. After waiting for AAA for what seemed like forever, and Uncle Al not wanting me or Bill to call and "bother" AAA, I did, finally - and learned they were not coming because he had given the address as "the corner of Sampton Road and near the restaurant/tavern there." spoken like a true homegrown local :) She said we need a number and a street! The second thing - I called Denine to ask John to call me and meekly suggested that despite Uncle Al not wanting to get a mobile phone -- it might be a good investment :) I understand Richard got him one that he used and embraced...
And another favorite memory was our trip to Old Saybrook, CT for my mother & her sister's Admiral Uncle Gerry's Navel Retirement gala. There was Aunt Margaret & Uncle Bob, my parents and Aunt Elaine & Uncle Al and Bill and me. After the festivities, we retired to the local inn where we were staying - typical New England seaside inn - all wavy, wobbly wood floors - but had that fabulous bar. Bill regaled them with jokes, and stories flew like seagulls at a bread toss and we laughed until the wee hours.
Thanks for the memories, Uncle Al.
I raise an honored salute to a very, great man- humble & sincere.
Thank you for elevating our lives for the better. We celebrate you and your life.
Please continue to watch over us?
We love you.
Leeann & Bill
